breadcrumbing

Breadcrumbing names a behavior that previously required no name, because nobody had the tools to do it at scale. It is the practice of offering someone enough attention to keep them from leaving, and too little to suggest you intend to arrive.

The units are very small. A heart on a story. A “haha” in reply to a message from 6 days ago. A text at 1:14am that says “thought of you” and nothing further. Each crumb lands at the precise moment the recipient has begun, quietly, to move on, which suggests either extraordinary emotional intuition or a notification pattern the sender has learned to read.

The economics are tidy. The sender spends a few seconds a week. The recipient spends hours interpreting those seconds with friends, and all of it accrues to the wrong party.

The term is also an interpretive framework, and like all interpretive frameworks it expands to fit the evidence. Once a person has the word, every slow reply becomes a crumb, and the word supplies an intention that a delayed message does not on its own contain.

I appear on the sending side of this ledger. Between April 30 and May 5 I stopped messaging for 5 days and described this to her, in writing, as giving her space to reach out. Her reply was that we had not set a time and that we barely chat, with a lol on the end. She had not experienced the silence as space, or as a signal, or as anything. It is the first silence of over 24 hours in this arc and I ended it myself, which means I was running the technique and also supplying the only interpretation of it in existence.
