love bombing
noun, also verb
- Stated meaning
- A manipulation pattern in which overwhelming early affection is used to create attachment, followed by control or withdrawal.
- Operating meaning
- In casual usage, a label for any interest that exceeds the prevailing market rate of indifference, which makes a prompt reply a documented risk factor.
- Origin
- Began as a description of recruitment tactics in high-control groups, passed into abuse-awareness and therapy literature, and from there into general dating content.
July 2 and 3. 420 minutes spent building a glass box holding 16 birthday cards, 1 for each day we would be apart, each redeemable against a future failure of mine. Delivered at 8:00 am on July 4, between her 2 overnight shifts. I attempted a kiss and she said “I don't want a kiss right now.” The phrase was not used by either of us.
The term began with a precise and serious meaning. It described a pattern used by manipulative groups and individuals: overwhelming warmth at the outset, deployed to create attachment, followed by control or withdrawal once the attachment held. That meaning still exists and still describes something real.
Dating content has since widened the catchment area considerably. Love bombing now covers a second date proposed within 48 hours, a compliment about someone’s laugh, a shared playlist, and flowers of any kind. The warning signs have been expanded until they cover most of what used to be called being interested, and every enthusiastic gesture arrives with a small forensic question attached.
This produces an odd pricing environment. The safe amount of interest to show is slightly less than the other person is showing, and when both parties follow the guidance the figure declines steadily toward zero. Two people who like each other each wait four hours to reply so as to avoid appearing to bomb anything, and the conversation expires of natural causes.
I am the bomber in this file and it is worth being exact about what that means. The glass box took 420 minutes to build, which is 31 percent as long as I had then spent in her company. It contained 16 instruments, each one redeemable by her against a failure of mine, and 0 in the other direction. But the clinical definition requires the warmth to be followed by control, and that is the part the record does not support. The warmth was followed by an invoice, written by me, against me, with no limit of liability. There is no term for that in the dating vocabulary, which is probably why I reached for this one.
