September 3, by text, at 11:30 pm. “free?”, then “so no hang?”, then “jesus was asking to hang not fuck, nevermind”, the whole thread inside 6 minutes. The word was used twice, and what it named was settled only once it had been declined.
“Hang out” lost its second word somewhere in the move to messaging. The full phrase already named an activity with no agenda, and the shortened form drops the only part of it that pointed anywhere. What is left is a verb that can be sent, declined, and afterwards described as something else.
The advice economy does not sell the word. It sells the position the word is for. One shelf of content teaches men to hold the frame and never be the first to state an intention. Another teaches women to protect their peace and never be the first to state an intention. The two shelves are sold to different people at different prices and they arrive at the same instruction, which is to make the other party name the evening. A word that names no evening is the tool that instruction requires.
Under load it produces a negotiation conducted entirely in what has not been said. An invitation to hang can be a film, a bar, or a bed, and which one it was is decided after the reply comes back. The refusal is equally deniable, because nothing was formally offered. The party who states a content first has handed the other the vocabulary for declining it.
