the spark
noun phrase
- Stated meaning
- An immediate mutual attraction that tells both people the thing is worth continuing.
- Operating meaning
- The one line on the form that takes no evidence, which makes it the only line capable of closing an account that every other line says to keep open.
- Origin
- Older than the apps, borrowed from ignition and kept in circulation because it is the one requirement nobody is ever asked to justify.
September 6, by text. The evening before had run 180 minutes at $248.00, with 0 phone checks, 15 questions from her and 10 from me, even travel and nothing said that had to be dated and held. I wrote that I had really enjoyed her company and did not feel a romantic connection. The phrase was not used.
The spark is the oldest term in this lexicon and the only one that has never needed defending. It arrived from fire, it survived the arrival of the apps, and it has outlasted every framework built to replace it. Compatibility scores, attachment styles and 5-year plans all sit downstream of it, and any of them can be overruled by a person saying they did not feel it.
The advice economy is split on the point and sells from both halves. One shelf treats the spark as the only honest signal, the thing you cannot manufacture and should not talk yourself out of. The other shelf sells the slow burn: give it 3 dates, attraction is built, the spark is a nervous system responding to unavailability. Neither position can be tested, both are comforting on the day they are needed, and a reader can hold whichever one fits the evening they just had.
Under load the word does no work until the end. Nobody opens with it. It is produced at the close, as the reason that overrides the record, and it is unarguable by design: the person holding it cannot be cross-examined, and the person on the other end of it has nothing to answer. It is also the only thing on the form that cannot be requested.
On September 6 I closed the strongest evening this file has recorded. It ran 180 minutes at $248.00, with 0 phone checks in either direction, 15 questions from her against my 10, the second even travel row in 13 dates, no disclaimers and no rationalization. This site can price a dozen roses left in a car for 180 minutes and 420 minutes of glass box, and it has no column for the thing that ended that one. I sent a sentence instead, and the sentence is the only entry in the file with nothing behind it.
