July 1, a jewelry counter at the mall. I took her hand and asked the saleswoman to confirm a ring size of 4.5, a figure she had given me on April 25 and I had forgotten for 67 days. Measured, it came back smaller than stated.
The phrase belongs to the vocabulary of procurement. It describes a candidate who has cleared an initial screen for a role that the speaker controls, has not defined, and may never fill. The criteria are seldom written down, which allows them to be revised mid-interview.
Most of the criteria concern what the candidate does not do. She does not post much. She does not go out on Thursdays. She has a quiet phone and a low need for attention. The standard is assembled almost entirely from absences, which makes it cheap to state and impossible to confirm, and which means the rating can be issued after very little contact and withdrawn after slightly more.
The speaker’s own qualifications are outside the scope of the review. This is not an oversight in the term, it is the term’s entire structure: one party is the position and the other party is the panel, and the panel does not submit a file.
