The word is “daddy” with its first consonant worn down to a z, an assibilation (opens in a new window) nobody has traced to a first speaker. The earliest definition on record, posted to Urban Dictionary in 2008, is “the slang term for a really ‘handsome’ guy who is very appealing and looks really fashionable.” Merriam-Webster (opens in a new window) found it on social media by early 2016 and spreading after Ty Dolla $ign’s song of that name in August, and it kept the age of the word it was built from. The dictionary’s zaddy is attractive, usually fashionable, and middle-aged.

The title is conferred by an audience, not applied for. In 2023 the internet awarded it to Pedro Pascal, who said on a talk show that he was still trying to figure it out (opens in a new window): “it changes… there’s zaddy, there’s daddy.” When a fellow guest offered that zaddy carried a silver fox quality, he said “I’ll take it all.” The man being rated is the last to learn the criteria, and the correct response, which he found, is to accept the rating without asking what they are.

Under load, the word is a compliment on tailoring that does the work of a question about money. In 37 samples from 33 countries (opens in a new window), David Buss found women valuing “cues to resource acquisition” in a mate more highly than men did, and men valuing cues to reproductive capacity more highly than women. Age and a good jacket are both cues. The word lets the first preference be stated as an interest in fashion, the way the men’s vocabulary states the second as an interest in youth, and neither side has to say the number.

It records her dress on July 25, and twice it records a look of hers as attractive: on April 25 and on July 31, both times a dissatisfied look over a dish that did not come with the garnishes and sides she had asked about.
