Frame is what men’s dating content calls composure once composure has been made into a course. The core curriculum holds that no one else should be allowed to decide what is happening. Holding frame means continuing to behave as though your version of the evening is the official one, regardless of evidence.
In practice this produces a very specific kind of date. One person tells a story. The other person, who is holding frame, receives the story with a slight nod and a measured pause, to signal that he is not seeking approval. The storyteller reads the pause as boredom, which is accurate, because maintaining the pause has taken all of his attention.
The vocabulary encourages a running internal commentary. Every question becomes a test. Every late arrival becomes a frame challenge. A suggestion to split the check becomes a negotiation over who is leading. The evening gets narrated twice, once out loud and once in the second voice, which is always slightly louder.
Whatever the opposite of this is, I did it in writing. On June 17, after 4 days of silence, I sent an itemized account of the asymmetry between what I had put in and what had come back, as a message, unprompted. It listed the imbalance and asked for a response. There is no reading of the curriculum in which a man sends the other party a memo about his own investment, and there is no version of composure that includes an appendix. The memo produced a phone call and the arrangement continued for another 55 days. I do not think it worked. I think it was answered, which is a different thing, and it is the thing the course is designed to prevent anyone from finding out they wanted.
