The technique is short enough to fit on an index card, which is part of why it fits so well on a sales page. A compliment is given, then partly withdrawn. The theory, set out in forum posts that still circulate as screenshots, holds that the withdrawal lowers the listener’s perceived status and raises the speaker’s by the same amount, as though status were a fixed quantity of water poured between two glasses.
The economy around the technique has outlived the theory, which is the part worth noticing. Ebooks, bootcamps, and monthly tiers that include recordings of strangers at bars narrated afterwards by a coach. The product is the script. The customer is the man buying it. The person the script is used on contributes nothing to the revenue and appears in every write-up, where she is renamed a set.
That last arrangement is the durable one, and it survives long after the technique has been abandoned as ineffective. A market can be built on interactions with a person who is not in it, has not consented to being in it, and will never see the material produced about her.
