socialating

noun

Stated meaning
Combining a date with a night out among friends.
Operating meaning
A date held in front of each party's friends, who come along as support and stay on as the panel.
Origin
The UK dating site MySingleFriend, in April 2016, a month after it began selling events that singles attended with a friend. Cambridge Dictionary entered it that November.

Cambridge Dictionary (opens in a new window) defines it as “the practice of combining a romantic date with a social outing with friends,” and cites a UK dating site in April 2016: “Socialating means pretty much what it sounds like – sociable dating – and is a growing trend amongst people who like to mix meeting new people with hanging out with their mates.” The site had a product to go with the trend. A month earlier it had launched events (opens in a new window) that encouraged attendees “to bring along a friend of the opposite sex, as part of a Friends’ Ticket deal,” and its founder said that “There is something more organic about having friends help you find a match.”

In July 2016 Tinder built the group into the app. Tinder Social (opens in a new window) let a group of friends name an activity, and “The app then matches that group with another group that is interested in doing the same.” Sean Rad, a Tinder co-founder, told TechCrunch (opens in a new window) that its users “were very much focused on immediacy and cared about what they wanted to do tonight.”

Under load, each party arrives with witnesses. The friends lower the stakes of the evening and raise them for the review, which is held the same night by people who were present for all of it, before either party has formed a view alone. A first impression is made on one person and recorded by several. The date ends when the group does, which spares both parties the decision about when to leave, and hands it to whoever is driving.
