July 15. A card redeemed 11 days after it was written, for an overnight at a family resort in town: $686.10 for the booking, then $160.00 over a limit the policy did not contain. I was in another state for the whole of it and sent the overage the next day.
The soft life began as a sensible idea, that a person should not have to suffer in order to deserve rest. It has since become a set of purchasable scenes: the silk pillowcase, the weekday spa appointment, the linen photographed on a balcony at the correct hour.
In dating contexts the phrase does two jobs. It tells a prospective partner what the speaker values, and it tells that partner the approximate monthly budget. A profile that reads “living my soft life, match my peace” is a job listing with the salary range left as an exercise.
The ideology is equally available to men, who practice it under different branding. Their version involves cold water, a sauna, and a morning routine described in the language of athletic recovery. It costs about the same and is photographed from a slightly lower angle.
The real difficulty is that ease, once it becomes a stated identity, requires an underwriter. Someone has to absorb the friction that the soft life is defined by not having. In this file that role was filled, and it was filled voluntarily, by me. I wrote 16 instruments against my own future failures, handed them over, and settled the first claim 11 days later at $686.10 for a room I did not sleep in, plus $160.00 of overage I was told about the next day and sent the same afternoon, for $846.10 in total. The policy had no limit of liability because I did not think to write one in. Nothing about that transaction was soft at my end, which is the point of the term: softness is a position in a system, and the system needs a second position.
