orange peel theory

noun phrase

Stated meaning
Asking a partner to do a small task you could do yourself, such as peeling a piece of fruit, to see whether they do it gladly.
Operating meaning
A test given without notice, set on a task chosen for being too small to refuse, and graded on the manner of compliance.
Origin
From TikTok in November 2023: a slideshow posted on November 4, and the name on November 11, in a video explaining it.

The slideshow that started it was posted on November 4, 2023 (opens in a new window), and had 15 million views by the end of the month. The name followed (opens in a new window) on November 11, from a user whose explanation the coverage summarized as discerning “how much you can trust your partner by seeing how they react to you asking them to do a small task you could easily do yourself — like peeling an orange.” By November 29 the hashtag had over 35 million views.

The same user described the second stage: the person asking is after “a small favor to see your reaction to see if later they can ask you for bigger favors.” By June 2025 Cambridge Dictionary (opens in a new window) had entered it in a gentler sense, as love shown through small acts of kindness, the peeled orange its example, in place of grand gestures.

Under load, the theory is a pilot for a larger request. The task is chosen for being too small to decline, so a refusal reads as a verdict and compliance reads as a line of credit. The partner is graded without being told an exam is in progress, and the score is recorded by the examiner alone. A test of this kind is valid only while it is secret, and this one reached 35 million viewers in under 4 weeks.
